Key Factors for Safely Aging in Place
Aging in place is preferred by over 90% of older adults, but it's important to consider the factors that make it a good choice. Key factors for safely aging in place include health, mobility and home safety, activities of daily living, and a social network that is available to help if needed.
Health
Chronic conditions such as:
diabetes
COPD
arthritis
hypertension
are well managed and do not hamper quality of life.
Mobility and home safety Fall risks are minimal and the home has been evaluated for accessibility and safety:
stairs
poor lighting
inaccessible bathrooms
can be hazardous for older adults living alone. Memory loss or early dementia can also create safety risks.
Activities of daily living
Medication management is an essential activity of daily living. Individuals aging in place should be able to:
ensure that medications are filled and organized
take medications at the right time
take medications in the right quantity
Other activities of daily living that should be able to be accomplished independently or with minimal help are:
bathing
grooming
cooking
housekeeping and finances
Social network
Family members, friends, or paid help are available if needed. Family and/or social network is available to check in daily or regularly, and community resources are available if needed; including transportation, social activities, meals, and home improvements.
