How to Get the Most From Your Wellness Program

Wellness or Wellbeing programs are evolving. One company says, “Wellness Programs are out and Wellbeing Strategies are in.” Employers offer wellness options as a benefit for their employees, a way to attract talent, and, potentially, a way to reduce costs. Wellness programs and strategies in the workplace can include full-service programs, company-wide health report cards, flu shots, and employee screening and testing for COVID-19.

Wellbeing Strategies or Wellness Programs can be a way for companies to get a pulse of their employees’ overall health. This is now a top priority more than ever. There are myriad of options for wellness so it’s important to determine what is most beneficial for your company to know about your employees’ health. A company’s wellness program should be a reflection of their unique needs based on the employee population. A company “health report card” provides a view into what programs would be most beneficial for employees’ long-term well being. An annual flu shot program is a simple solution to seasonal sickness, while a far more in-depth approach to employee wellness consists of a full lab panel with strategic health initiatives put into place to align with the needs of the population.

Although there has been plenty of debate on wellness programs in the workplace, it’s agreed that the benefits must be tracked long-term and traditional ROI measurements may not fully capture the value of investing in wellness. All wellness offerings are not equally effective, says Scott Rotermund co-founder and chief growth officer for Welltok, a provider of well-being program software and resources. Those that are personalized to address participants' specific needs—"driving the most valuable actions for each individual employee"—are more likely to yield results, he said.

An overall approach to employee wellness coupled with employee engagement is a dynamic way to attract candidates and keep employees an engaged part of your team. Any size company can benefit from integrating employee wellness strategies as long as the strategies are targeted to your company’s specific needs.
